“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13
Have you ever done something good for someone else and just want to share it with others? It feels good to do things for other people but we need to be careful that we are doing it because it’s the right thing to do not because we want that pat on the back from our friends and family.
Several years ago I had stopped at a little Dunkin Donuts to grab a cup of coffee for my mom and I. While I was on line waiting a young man came in and was visibly upset. It was the middle of winter and he ran out of gas about a half mile down the road. He had no money on him and was begging the clerk to let him get some gas…to no avail. I stepped in and paid for the items he needed and for a few dollars of gas.
It really bugged me that the store was so full of people and not one other person stepped up to help this kid. I was by no means financially secure myself but I couldn’t let him go without some type of help. When I finally arrived at home I told my mother what I did. Instead of getting that ‘pat on the back’ she flipped that I spent the amount of money I did to help him out. Almost immediately I felt in my heart that what I did was supposed to remain between me and God. That I wasn’t supposed to do it to hear ‘thatta girl’.
Matthew 6: 2-4 states: ‘Thus when you give to the needy sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
I know I’ve said it before but I really do enjoy reading scripture in a concordance. The Greek word used for hypocrites is speaking of an actor-someone playing a part. ‘Being praised by others’ is talking about wanting to be magnified in someone else’s eyes. But we should do these things in secret, in private. God knows all we do, He knows what is in our hearts and He will reward us accordingly.
We can have a tendency to be selfish, thinking mostly-in not only-about what we want, what is good for us. Let us go forward and work on thinking of others more than we do ourselves.
“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10
Have an awesome day friends!
In Jesus’ precious name.
